98th Southampton International Exhibition of photography 2011 – competition

Entries are now being accepted for the Southampton Camera Club’s: 98th Southampton International Exhibition of photography 2011.

The Southampton Camera Club was formed in 1896 and has been running its annual International Exhibition for nearly 100 years. Their 2010 International competition attracted well over 10,000 entries from more than 60 countries around the world, confirming their position as one of the largest photographic salons in the United Kingdom.

The closing date for entries is the 5th February 2011.

Think Tank Photo 5th Anniversary competition

Grand Prize

The Grand Prize winning-photographer will receive the $5,000 cash prize. The judges will select the one best photo from all photos submitted into the four categories: (1) What does urban, gritty, or edgy mean to you?; (2) The most creative, interesting, or unique “What’s In Your Bag” shot; (3) The most creative, interesting, or unique shot of photographers wearing/using Think Tank gear; (4) Any photo the entrant believes portrays Think Tank Photo’s “Be Ready ‘Before the Moment’” theme.

2nd Prize

The best photograph submitted for each of the four categories wins a Think Tank Photo Airport International V2.0 roller. Plus, the photographer of the image receiving the most votes by the public wins an Airport International V2.0 roller.

3rd Prize

The second best photograph submitted for each of the four categories wins an Urban Disguise 50 shoulder bag. This large capacity bag holds more gear than you ever imagined, and a 15.4” laptop!

4th Prize

The third best photograph submitted for each of the four categories wins a StreetWalker photo backpack. Designed for use in urban and crowded environments, this slim, lightweight backpack is sized as an international travel carry-on.

5th Prize

Five Honorable Mention winners will be selected for each of the four categories. They win a Pixel Pocket Rocket CF card holder. Store 10 memory cards in a small, compact package that fits easily in your pocket or attaches to your belt or bags.

BJP ‘Shoot the street’ 2010 competition winner

Ed Swinden wins the BJP ‘Shoot the Street‘ competition:

Ed was judged to have the best body of work by a four-strong judging panel: Diane Smyth, deputy editor of the BJP; Louise Clements, senior curator, co-founder and director of the Format Photography Festival; Mike Seaborne, senior curator of photographs at the Museum of London; and Sophie Howarth, co-author of ‘Street Photography Now’, published by Thames & Hudson.
Ed is now working with Louise Clements, curator of the Format Festival, to create an exhibition which will be printed by MX Display and go on show in at Format International Photography Festival 2011, in Derby, UK, from 4th March to 3rd April 2010. Ed also wins a Think Tank Photo Retrospective Lens Changer 2 (pinestone) shoulder bag courtesy of Snapperstuff.

Ed remarks: “This image is part of a large project I have been working on for some years about city life, and the place of people – particularly the workers – within it. I am very interested in combining high contrast, deep shadows and geometric patterns in the street scene with ambiguous human figures to produce images that hopefully resonate in a slightly different way from the street photographs people may have become familiar with in the past.”
